  • Visit Abbey Caves, explore an underground world of stalagmites, stalactites and glow worms in these extensive limestone caves, just 4km from the city centre, a torch and sturdy footwear is essential.
  • Visit Clapham’s Clock collection in Water Street
  • Walk through A.H. Reed Kauri Park on Whareora Road and get up close to some giants of the New Zealand bush
  • Take a leisurely 30 minute walk along the Hatea River to the Whangarei Falls and view the 26 metre spectacular falls
  • Visit Marsden Point Oil Refinery visitor centre near the harbour entrance
  • Take a day trip around the magical Tutukaka Coast taking in Matapouri, Whale Bay and Sandy Bay  - Tutukaka is the base for deep-sea fishing charters and diving trips to the Poor Knight’s Marine Reserve and shipwrecks
  • There are seven golf courses in the Whangarei area and visitors are welcome on all greens
